The Pennsylvania Women's Campaign Fund (PWCF) endorsed fourteen (14) female
candidates for the 2008 general election; eleven (11) were elected to office
in the PA General Assembly. Although we had an excellent success rate in
08, there is still much work to be done. Pennsylvania is ranked 46th
in the nation in terms of womens representation in the state legislature,
down from 44th after the 2006 election. If female representation in the
legislature matched female representation in the state's adult population,
Pennsylvania women would hold 133 seats, not the 37 they currently hold.
The PWCF believes that the presence of women in legislative bodies makes
a significant difference in the type of legislation that is discussed and
which bills are advanced in legislatively. At a recent White House Project
summit, it was determined that states with the lowest percentage of women
in their legislature pass the lowest number of bills supporting issues of
primary importance to women. This happens in Pennsylvania.
The PA Womens Campaign Fund is actively gearing up for the mid-term
elections in 2010which will prove to be of pivotal importance in shaping
the political landscape at an important time for the state. With competitive
Gubernatorial and US Senate races, along with all the State House and a number
of US House seats up for grabs, the 2010 campaign season will generate much
interest and activity from voters. Additionally, with redistricting to follow
in 2011, the results of the Campaign for 2010 will have a lasting impact.
The work of the PA Womens Campaign Fund is a collective effort between
donors, volunteers and candidates. Learn more about ways to support the
